Steps to Follow

This section contains information on what NACLE institution students need to do in order to participate in an exchange program with the University of Ottawa.

  1. Contact your school's international exchange program coordinator. They will be able to provide you with an information kit and an application form.

  2. Consult the 3rd edition of the 2000-2001 fall-winter timetable before making a course selection. This edition is available on the University's web site at the following address: http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/info/index.html. Please be aware that you cannot make a course selection based on the Faculty's (Common Law and Civil Law sections) course calendars. While the calendars contain descriptions for all courses, these are not all necessarily offered each year.

  3. Please make sure that your coordinator has the following information, which is required before submitting your application:
  • the application form from the Bureau for International Co-operation: Exchange Student Application -- 2000 - 2001 or 2001-2002 International Exchange Programs;
  • an official transcript (the most recent) - the transcript must be in French or English, or translated into one of these languages;
  • a letter written by you explaining your interests in participating in the exchange program (training objectives, courses, extracurricular activities, etc.);
  • a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or other appropriate authority;
  • an evaluation of your knowledge of one of the official languages of the University of Ottawa, being French or English. Applicants whose mother tongue or language of instruction is neither English nor French must submit results showing success in one of the following language tests: if you will be studying in English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or if you will be studying in French, the Test of French as a Second Language (TOFSL). You must sign up for one of the tests upon your arrival in Ottawa. Other official certification are also accepted;
  • a résumé.
  1. Please be aware of the deadlines for submitting an application:

    Date of Arrival in Ottawa   Submission Deadline

    January 2001   October 15, 2000
    September 2001   April 30, 2001
    January 2002   October 15, 2001

  2. If you require any additional information, please contact Line Bissonnette, the Co-ordinator for International Exchange Programs.

If you have been accepted to participate in an exchange in Ottawa:

  1. Please note that the home tuition rule applies. This means that you do not pay tuition or general fees to the University of Ottawa, but rather to your home institution.

  2. You must subscribe to the University Health Insurance Plan.

  3. Find a place to stay before you get to Ottawa. You can choose to live either in residence, or find an off-campus accommodation.

  4. Once you get to Canada, you may need some directions to get to the University's campus.

  5. Remember to sign up for a language test (TOEFL or TOFSL) if necessary.
